Newborn Info

In-home

My newborn photography style is a fusion of naturally posed portraits and “lifestyle” photography. Years of studio work taught me how to expertly use lighting, positioning, and angles, as well as how to comfortably and safely pose newborns. These skills allow me to capture professional, polished, and timeless portraits of your baby in the comfort of your own home.

My goal for newborn sessions is to tell your story during this special time at home with your new baby, and to provide natural and classic portraits featuring your newborn. I think these two approaches are complementary and provide a unique and comprehensive experience distinct from most other newborn photographers. Sessions last 1.5-2 hours, and take place sometime during the first 4 weeks.

What are “naturally posed” newborn portraits?

These images showcase your newborn and their tiny features. Poses are designed to keep baby in safe, natural, and comfortable positions, while attending to the details that elevate the images into polished and beautiful portraits of your little one. Sessions are baby led, and I follow baby’s cues to keep them content and minimize stress.

I don’t bring elaborate props or backdrops – photos of baby alone are done with blankets on a bed (your bed or a small newborn posing bed I bring).  Baby is either swaddled/wrapped or dressed in newborn-sized clothes I supply. I also bring blankets and a few small accessories (wraps, swaddles, hats/headbands).

What is “lifestyle” newborn photography?

Lifestyle photography captures real life situations in an artistic manner. It lies somewhere between classical portraiture and documentary photojournalism – neither fully posed nor completely candid. I work with this style for images of baby and family.

Lifestyle newborn photography is…
natural
emotional
storytelling

Lifestyle newborn photography is not
lots of props and backdrops
fully posed
everyone looking at the camera and smiling (though we will try to get a few of these, too!)

I will guide you through interactions with baby such as rocking, cuddling, “playing”, comforting, feeding, changing, swaddling, and simply admiring… all those things that make up your days with a newborn. Siblings are welcome to join in.
